Parking Garages: From Busted to Beautiful

To be successful and accessible, large-scale, urban retail and residential developments must be accompanied by an architectural eyesore: the multi-level parking garage. 

These massive structures, albeit functional, are often ugly and detract from the welcoming atmosphere of a public space. How can developers make the most of these utilitarian monstrosities? Commission Good Art, of course. 

In the Summer of 2021, Casey Droege Cultural Productions (CDCP) worked with Bella’s Army Painting, a commercial painting company hired by SomeraRoad Inc., the developers at Pittsburgh’s SouthSide Works, to envision the creative potential for such a structure. Bella’s Army would be repainting the entire parking garage and wanted to create a dynamic mural that would become a showstopper from across the river. CDCP was brought on board to help facilitate an artist’s design that Bella’s Army would execute on the building.
