Art Collecting 101: A Look into Tressa Jones’s Collection

Our staff is comprised of seasoned art collectors and experts. We asked around our staff and asked them to talk about their collection and what draws them to the work they acquire. For our first round of this new feature, we interviewed Tress Jones our Business Management Associate, and asked her all about how she goes about collecting art!

  1. Do you collect art for yourself?

Yes. I did not intentionally set out to collect art, but as an artist, I have acquired many pieces I love. Some of them I purchased and others are gifts or trades from other artists.

  2. Is there a theme in your collection? Or do you lean toward a certain type of media, artist, or aesthetic?

No theme. I have a great collection of fine art prints mostly because I am a printmaker myself.

  3. What is your favorite way to acquire art?

Through trades or purchasing from an artist I admire.

  4. Do you have any tips for folks wanting to build their own collection?

Get to know what you like and buy that.

  5. What's your favorite piece of art you own? (if you could share a photo and the artist's name, that would be great.)

6. What's your dream piece (or pieces!) of art that you would buy if money were no object?

Owning a painting by Jaune Quick-to-See Smith is a dream, she is amazing! I also love Robert Rauschenberg's silkscreen paintings, Louise Bourgeois's spiders, and Ann Hamilton's works on paper.
